TIFFIN UNIVERSITY
SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCES

Minimum Course Content Guide

Course Number:  HUM681

Course Name: Comprehensive Exams

Prerequisite: Completion of at least 21 hours of coursework.

Course Description: This course, co-taught by two faculty members, is available to students who wish to complete their course of study at Tiffin University with a comprehensive exam.  Students will spend the semester reviewing their coursework and reading and working with instructors to develop a list of test areas and sample questions. This course will have a cap of fifteen students. Due to the nature of this course – because it culminates in a two-week timed exam – students cannot take a grade of “I” under any circumstance, but may withdraw if necessary and retake the course when able.  Offered every semester. (3 hours)

Evaluations: Assignments will include
·      Discussion board posts
·      Review of course of study
·      Review of student reading
·      Organization of student reading
·      Live chats
·      Comprehensive exam

Minimum Topic Outline:
·      Review, organization, and focus of student reading in his or her graduate coursework
·      Discussion of focus and interests
·      Focusing these interests into seven to ten possible exam questions
·      Two weeks before the end of the semester, faculty will distribute exams of up to ten questions to students. These should reflect student interests but should not exactly match questions proposed by the student.
·      Students select three questions and write seven to ten page answers to each question, uploading their exam answers to a designated folder on turnitin.com.
·      Exam answers will be expected to meet the standards of coherence, clarity, and study, arguing a thesis and documenting sources following the latest edition of MLA style where necessary.  No research will be required for exam answers, however, and the exam is not expected to meet the standards of highly polished academic papers.  Passing papers should score at least a “2” on all measures included in the WAC rubric.

Potential Textbooks: Readings selected and reviewed as appropriate to the exam.
