Heidegger, M. (2008). The Thing. In D.F. Krell (Ed). Martin
Heidegger: Basic Writings. New York: Harper Perennial Modern Thought.
A jug is not a vessel because it was made.
-
It was made because of the need of a vessel.
-
It stands as something that needed to be made.
The invisible needs are characterized in the making.
Characteristics of a thing lay with its need to be called forth.
-
Beauty draws attention to a thing.
-
We tend to forget the needs that fostered a
thing.
o And
only see its utilitarian value.
o And
its beauty
o Relative
to our own position.
The jug is not jug qua jug.
-
but as a vessel.
-
Its ability to hold.
-
We use its empty space.
-
The void determines its making.
-
We set boundaries to create space.
Science synthesizes the known.
People synthesize the unknown.
That which concerns man is real.
Things manifest in the presence, but also the recollection.
