Com 520 - Philosophy of Communication - Week 14

Week 14
Saying is the articulation of expression.  These are Ramsey’s words for Ortega’s view.  I might modify it to: Language is framework that allows the articulations and creative interpretations of expressions.  It can be applied to any medium of communication, and it resonates strongly with me.
One could make the argument that articulation, interpretation and expression are clever substitutions for encoding, decoding and thought.  It is the difference between the subjective and the objective view, or phenomenology against transmission theory.
Most of our models have been linear with clear start and end points and points of transitions along the way.  I’m convinced our mental life and interactions are extraordinarily more dynamic than the models depict.  I am drawn to Gebser’s mental structures because he engages several modes of thought that intermix, and I’m drawn to Ortega’s idea that the body is where multiplicity comes together, and it is constantly changing due to circumstances.
Bakhtin gave me an insight I needed.  It’s not important if you believe in empirical knowledge theory or subjective phenomenology, but that the opposing views create the dialogue that opens spaces for further exploration of the ideas.  All these amazing ideas have been generated through the tension of opposing views and individual passions for exploration.

To me this means developing a position is nowhere near as important as how you frame and explore the problem.  It suggests that one can channel the tensions created by opposing views into a creative dialogue aimed towards resolution.
